Mica Gaskets & Seals

High-Thermal Resistance

What Is A Mica Gasket?

A mica gasket is a high-temperature and chemically resistant sealant made from mica sheets, used in industrial applications to prevent leaks and provide insulation between stationary components.

Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET line is lightweight and provides high thermal resistance for demanding industrial environments where conventional sealing materials may not meet application requirements. It combines flexibility with durability and is suitable for high-pressure environments and complex gasket shapes.

Available in muscovite and phlogopite mica, AX-GASKET can be specified for applications requiring thermal resistance, electrical insulation, and resistance to solvents, acids, and mineral oils.

Mica: A High-temperature Gasket Material For Extreme Service

A high temperature gasket material must maintain the thermal, mechanical, and sealing properties required by the application as operating temperatures increase. Material selection also depends on pressure, chemical exposure, electrical insulation requirements, gasket thickness, and the surfaces being sealed. For applications exposed to sustained or extreme heat, these requirements can limit the suitability of conventional gasket materials.

Rubber, elastomer, and fibre-based gasket materials can lose mechanical or sealing performance when operating temperatures exceed their specified limits. The exact temperature capability depends on the material and construction, so gasket selection should be based on the requirements of the specific system rather than temperature alone. This becomes especially important when the gasket must provide electrical insulation in addition to sealing under heat and pressure.

Mica provides another option for these demanding applications. Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET is manufactured from mica with a silicone binder and offers thermal resistance up to 1800°F, along with electrical insulation, flexibility, and suitability for high-pressure environments. It also resists solvents, acids, and mineral oils. These properties make mica gasket material useful where sealing performance must be combined with thermal and electrical insulation.

AX-GASKET is available as high-temperature gasket sheet material that can be fabricated into application-specific seals, strips, and punched parts. For engineers and procurement teams evaluating a high-temperature gasket material, mica is particularly relevant when the application requires a combination of heat resistance, dielectric performance, chemical resistance, and dimensional flexibility.

Asbestos Panel Replacement

Mica gaskets and panels can be used as a replacement for asbestos-based sealing and insulating materials in forging machines, hydraulic presses, and other industrial equipment where the required thermal, electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties are compatible with mica. Material selection should be based on the specific operating requirements of the application rather than treated as a universal one-for-one substitution.

Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET provides thermal resistance up to 1800°F (982°C), electrical insulation, and resistance to solvents, acids, and mineral oils. These properties make mica suitable for applications where asbestos-based panels or gaskets were historically used for high-temperature insulation and sealing. The required thickness, dimensions, pressure conditions, and installation configuration should be evaluated before replacing an existing material.

How Ax-gaskets Are Made

Axim sources high grade Phlogopite mica, which gives the gaskets its thermal characteristics and resistance to harsh chemicals.

The mica paper is then impregnated with a silicone binder to enhance durability and flexibility.

After impregnation, the material is cut and shaped into seals and gaskets, designed to withstand extreme conditions.

CUSTOM SHAPES, PUNCHED PARTS AND STRIPS

Beyond standard sheets and rolls, Axim Mica produces custom gasket shapes, punched parts, and cut strips to match specific equipment and design requirements. Components can be sized and profiled for existing assemblies or new designs using available AX-GASKET material formats.

Axim Mica accepts PDF and CAD files as well as hand-sketched drawings for custom fabrication. Contact Axim Mica with your dimensions, material requirements, and drawings to discuss a custom part.

FAQs

The following answers cover mica gasket composition, high-temperature performance, common applications, and what to consider when ordering custom parts.

Mica gaskets are sealing and insulating components made from mica material for applications involving high temperatures, electrical insulation, chemical exposure, or pressure. Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET is available in muscovite and phlogopite mica with a silicone binder and provides thermal resistance up to 1,800°F (982°C).

Unlike graphite, mica provides electrical insulation, while its temperature capability can also exceed that of many conventional rubber, elastomer, and compressed fibre gasket materials. AX-GASKET also resists solvents, acids, and mineral oils and can be fabricated into custom shapes, strips, and punched parts.

Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET provides thermal resistance up to 1,800°F (982°C). In addition to high-temperature capability, it provides electrical insulation, resistance to solvents, acids, and mineral oils, and flexibility for complex shapes. AX-GASKET is also suitable for high-pressure environments, supporting applications where thermal, electrical, chemical, and mechanical requirements overlap.

Mica gaskets are used in high-voltage cabins as mechanical supports and electrical insulators, in forging machines and hydraulic presses as asbestos panel replacements, and in automotive exhaust manifolds. They are also used in power and energy, heavy industry, and electronics applications where thermal resistance, electrical insulation, or chemical resistance is required.

Finished AX-GASKET components are available in thicknesses from 1mm to 3.0mm, with custom thicknesses available based on application requirements. AX-GASKET sheet stock is available from 0.1mm to 3.0mm, while roll stock is available from 0.1mm to 0.25mm.

Yes. Axim Mica produces custom gasket shapes, punched parts, and cut strips based on your specifications. PDF and CAD files, as well as hand-sketched drawings, can be used to quote and produce custom parts.

Lead time depends on the gasket shape, thickness, quantity, and fabrication requirements. Contact our engineering team with your specifications for a project-specific lead time.

Mica and graphite gaskets differ most clearly in their electrical properties and temperature behavior. Axim Mica’s AX-GASKET provides electrical insulation and thermal resistance up to 1,800°F (982°C), while graphite is electrically conductive and has a continuous temperature capability up to 850°F (454°C) in oxidizing air. Graphite can withstand much higher temperatures in inert environments, so the right material depends on the operating atmosphere, temperature, pressure, chemical exposure, and electrical insulation requirements.

Yes, mica gaskets and panels can be used as a replacement for asbestos-based materials in forging machines, hydraulic presses, and similar equipment where mica’s thermal, electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties meet the application requirements. The replacement should be evaluated for the specific thickness, dimensions, pressure conditions, and installation configuration rather than treated as a universal one-for-one substitution.
To quote a custom gasket, Axim Mica needs the part dimensions, thickness, quantity, and applicable material or performance requirements. A PDF, CAD file, or hand-sketched drawing can also be provided to help define the required shape and dimensions.
